That is why trying to find the best Souls-likes on PC is like trying to find the best replicas of the Mona Lisa – it ain’t easy, trust us. But there’s no denying that the Souls DNA – whether the mood, mechanics, or just a shorthand for daunting combat – is etched into the codes of many games that have been released in the past few years.ĭark Souls is a ridiculously high bar to measure against, though, and one that many titles don’t even come close to matching. It’s a game about fixing old cameras, but also one that will make you think a bit more deeply about how you treat those closest to you.Cue the Souls-like: arguably a crude, reductive description that has permeated the gaming landscape in the wake of FromSoftware’s leviathans. It’s not especially difficult, but the repair work ties into the story in an easy, memorable way. You’ll use a screwdriver to pry them apart and then find whatever needs to be replaced. It’s very satisfying taking apart these devices and then reassembling them.
In between all that, you’ll be fixing old objects like a slide projector or Game Boy-style handheld. Whereas Monument Valley did a brilliant job of creating narrative from little dialogue, Assemble With Care goes in the opposite direction each of the 13 chapters opens and closes with a narrated sequence outlining what’s going on. The game puts you in the role of a repairwoman who has just settled in for a quick stay at a seaside town, and decides to take on a few jobs while she’s there. There are a few disappointments - most notably the stiff and drab Various Daylife, from the team behind the excellent JRPG Bravely Default - but Apple Arcade has a solid batting percentage at launch.įrom the studio behind Monument Valley, Assemble With Care is a similarly brief, touching, and tactile experience that feels perfect for mobile. In fact, one of the most startling things has been discovering just how excellent the fairly large lineup of games is. However, it’s important to note that these aren’t the only games worth playing on Apple Arcade. (It’s a hard job, but someone has to do it.) For the past few days I’ve been digging through the Apple Arcade lineup to pick out the 10 games I’d recommend most, spanning a number of genres and play styles. It can make figuring out where to start almost paralyzing. The biggest problem with the service right now, though, is that it can be overwhelming. If there are even two titles that pique your interest, that’s worth the price of admission. The subscription service launches tomorrow for $4.99 a month, and it’s making its debut with a huge range of excellent games from renowned studios like Ustwo, Simogo, and Capy Games. Let’s just get this out of the way: if you’re at all interested in high-quality mobile games and you own an iOS device, Apple Arcade is a no-brainer.
